The existence of museums in Vila Nova de Famalicão dates back to the early 1920s, with the opening of the first Portuguese house museum – the Camilo House Museum – to the public. Over the following decades, several museums opened, full of history, memory and identity, where culture is seen to be crucial to the exercise of citizenship. On November 26, 2012, with the signing of the Declaration of Principles, the Vila Nova de Famalicão Museum Network (VNFMN) was established.

Based on the Portuguese Museums Framework Law, the VNFMN is composed of museums and visitable collections within the municipality that come under different auspices, totalizing twelve: Camilo House – Museum. Study Centre; Bernardino Machado Museum; Cupertino Miranda Foundation Museum – Portuguese Surrealism Centre; National Railway Museum – Lousado Centre; Ave Basin Textile Industry Museum; Castro Alves Foundation Ceramic Art Museum; Automobile Museum; Colonial War Museum; Soledade Malvar House-Museum; Lapa Chapel Sacred Art Museum; Museum of the Lemenhe Brotherhood of Our Lady of Mt Carmel; Mouquim Civic and Religious Museum.
It is coordinated by the Municipal Coucil through its Culture and Tourism Division.
