Famalicão Youth Film Festival receives more than 250 short films

255 short films were received in this year’s edition of YMotion –Young Film Festival of Famalicão, developed by young directors aged between 12 and 35 years, from 52 Portuguese cities. This is a record number of entries in the festival, which is already in its seventh edition, and which will take place from 8 to 13 November in the Casa da Juventude, in Famalicão, in the Camillian Studies Centre, in Seide, and in the Castro Alves Foundation, in Bairro.
From these almost three hundred entries, there was the selection of about 40 works that are competing in eight categories: "Joaquim de Almeida Grand Prize", "High Schools", "Best Documentary", "Best Animated Short", "Best Acting", "Best Screenplay", "Best Cinematography" and "Audience Award". All the prizes involve a monetary value ranging between 250€ and 750€, with the exception of the "Joaquim de Almeida Grand Prize", worth 2.500€.
The jury of the competition, led by the screenwriter Tiago Santos, is composed of director Leonor Teles, actress Benedita Pereira, journalist Tiago Alves, journalist Pedro Oliveira, journalist Ana Markl and director Filipe Rufatto, winner of the last edition of YMotion.
In the “Joaquim Almeida Grand Prize” there are 19 candidates in competition, among them “Perpetual Night” (2020) by Pedro Peralta, «The Queen» (2020) by Lúcia Pires, «Hunting Day» (2020) by Alberto Seixas e “Alleyway of the Imaginary» (2021) by Romano Casselis.
Besides the short films covered by this award, there are 21 other works in competition, divided into the “Documentary” category, where five movies have been selected, most of them by directors completing their academic career, "Animation", where the selection is composed of 10 short films, and, finally, "High Schools", where six projects by students are in competition.
In addition to the competitive component, this edition includes a training cycle, an exhibition dedicated to the films in competition, a special session focusing on the work of Portuguese film producer Ukbar Filmes, in the "Novíssimo Cinema Português" section, curated by Rui Tendinha, a tribute to Portuguese actress Maria João Bastos, a tribute to composers Bernardo Sassetti and Ennio Morricone, and a "Talk & Showcase" with the presence of the band Capitão Fausto.
It is recalled that YMotion is a festival organised by the City Council of Vila Nova de Famalicão since 2015, which has established itself on the circuit of film shows and festivals in the country, serving as a lever for the work of young filmmakers aged 12 to 35. In the 2020 edition, almost two hundred short films were received in the competition and director Filipe Rufatto received the "Joaquim de Almeida Grand Prize" for his film "Sofia" (2019).
